How the Little Black Dress Originated

Posted by: BAS in , ,

We must take a visit back in time to the 1920's, to properly understand the fashion industry that produced the little black dress that was such a fabulous necessity for any wardrobe. As women shed their long, layered dresses, cut their hair and enjoyed the fast-paced party life, society slowly became more accepting of women baring slightly more of her shoulders, back, and legs. In general, a woman of the 20s era was very thin and really didn't need to look any smaller.

It was during the 1920s that the legendary fashion designer Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel first stitched her name into the first little black dress. For the most part, Chanel's designs are often considered to be the epitome of the 20s fashions because her work was so simplistic, modern, and somewhat futuristic.

Chanel encouraged and inspired the womens fashions we typically think of when we envision flappers. Chanel was fond of working with neutral colors and soft easy-to-wear jersey fabrics that were simple in shape and cut. Chanel was able to infuse comfort and sophistication into fashion, and this combination was considered revolutionary. It was during her early work, that Chanel designed and introduced the first little black dress to the world and did so with much success.

First introduced in 1926, wearing black was previously considered to be a color reserved mostly for funerals and periods of mourning. Truly simple and sexy, Chanel's first little black dress design was a sleeveless sheath cut just above the knee. She could have never predicted the high demand and lasting love women would have with her simple, little black dress.

Chanel was once quoted of saying, "Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury." Whether a woman's little black dress cost $60 or $3,000 her intention is always the same: to look effortlessly classic and elegantly sexy in just minutes. While most of us cannot afford to buy Chanel's designer dresses, we can certainly wear our little black dresses with the modern, sophistication she possessed when she designed the classic, little black dress.

Wrap Skirt - Make Your Own Style - A Perfect Casual

Posted by: BAS in ,

Nothing makes dressing as easy as quickly wrap around a skirt and a slip on to a top and off you go. Apart from not having to think too hard, a Wrap Skirt could be both empowering and utterly sexy. No need to bother about the shape and fittings. It compliments you the way you are.

A wrap skirt could become a stylish foundation for a crisp white shirt or your floral blouse. Winter Florals are a natural phenomenon in women’s fashion especially in the Big Apple. This is one city which loves flowers all year round and more when they disappear. Many designers believe that flowers are good to go from day to night either in Bouquets of on the garments. A wrap skirt is always fresh as the flowers and ready for all occasions. If you do not know what to wear, which color to wear – Choose a Wrap Skirt.

If you want to be bit more casual think of this Multi wear Wrap Skirt or Dress Skirt in every imaginable line and finish that can take you from office to the opera. Skirts had always been the preferred choice of the fashion forward for decade after decade. The wrap skirt survived all odds and passed all tests.

High style is not always about comfort. It is more about looks. The motivators that created these high fashion saviors were unconditionally overruled in course of time. They were gone as quickly as they arrived. Whatever maybe our individual choices, designers globally have finally decided to bid farewell to those queens fashion. Comfort won over looks. Once again the wrap skirts survived and carried on steadily and quietly.

In the last 2 decades there had been a whole new intellectual wave to fashion and skirts being an important factor. But the wrap skirt had always been a silent player. I would call it a survivor. New technologies were introduced in the manufacturing line, new cuts, new shapes and new purpose to define the new generation. The globalization added new concepts and there was the cultural blending. The internet made the world feel like a thimble making the designers come closer and there was a beautiful fusion of Japanese, American and European fashion. The fashion’s new formula was re-written. No longer had a seam needed to sit in a particular place on the body. No longer had a skirt had to be made from a certain fabric. No longer had the top necessarily needed to match the bottom. A whole new generation of skirts evolved where comfort was the ultimate factor.

The Wrap Skirt itself went under many evolutions. The inspiration was all about the comfort and looks. The multi wear wrap skirts are the simplest and most practical. The wrap skirt I am talking about is very different from their ancestors. This wrap skirt was born to give you all the freedom and fly your imagination and be a designer yourself. You create your own style, your own design, your own signature with this wrap skirt and wear it the way you like – no rules, no grammar and no restrictions. The fabric is silk with oriental designs and beautiful clash of colors and patterns. If you think of optimizing your money for a skirt, this is the one, Multi wear Wrap Skirt. 1 Wrap Skirt – 100 Ways to wear. These wrap skirts are gaining more and more popularity for its usefulness.

British Shoe designer creates a shoe collection for Mulberry
News(This amoung one of his first designs for Mulberry)
British shoe designer Jonathan Kelsey has created a footwear range for luxury fashion house Mulberry.

This is the first time the brand has branched out into shoes, with the line set to debut as part of London Fashion Week (LFW) next month.

Kelsey has designed a total of five styles for the capsule collection, including a riding boot, an ankle boot and a shoe-boot.

England's answer to Christian Louboutin will present the shoes at LFW on February 14th and the collection will go on sale at select Mulberry stores in September.

Mulberry's chief operating officer Lisa Montague, told Womenswear Daily: "Footwear has always been in our plan, and now is the right time.

"We love Jonathan's styles and he's a good fit for the brand. All the models are based on his last [collection] - and adapted to Mulberry's style, using the colors of the season."

Kelsey has previously worked with his cousin - and one-time Mulberry creative director -Stuart Vevers on a collection for Luella.

The first ever Mulberry shoe line will be on sale by September 2008, and prices will range from $100 to $500

Comparison:

My overall thought:

Jonathan Kelsey shoes are always amazing but I like that his Murberry line is cheaper than his own. This time I can actually afford to buy more than one pair at a time. Can't wait till September.

Bella Freud makes new film for her collection (3-minute long film)

Posted by: BAS in

Bella Freud will promote her latest collection entitled Demonstration in a short film written by Hanif Kureishi.

The Buddha of Suburbia author is working with the designer and The Queen director Stephen Fears to produce the three-minute movie.

Freud has embarked on similar projects before, previously working with John Malkovich on films to promote her autumn/winter 1999 collection Strap Hanging and 2000's Lady Behave.

According to Vogue, she told the February edition of Tatler that Kureishi has been keen to offer his opinions on the fashion world.

"Hanif's like, 'Well, Bells, this is a gig for your clothes, but I don't want the clothes to be the stars - it's the person who lights up the clothes'," Freud said.

The film version of Strap Hanging is set on a train and based around the story of a Japanese man with inflatable pants.

Several models took part in the project back in 1999, generating interest in the follow-up which was shown at New York Fashion Week and featured Laura Bailey and Jodie Kidd.

My Overall opinion:
I think if the film is to show that her clothing is not just made for stars, then I dont think she should have stars in the roles like last time.

Burberry adds colour to Ads

News

Burberry has broken with tradition and chosen to do away with its black and white advertising campaign.

The fashion house has revealed its latest poster campaign featuring Agyness Deyn and a series of other bright young things.

Creative director Christopher Bailey said now marks the perfect time for the label to break away from the black and white images typical of Burberry.

He explained that "movement, energy and character" sum up "the defining spirit of this spring/summer 2008 ad campaign".

"Working together with an eclectic, British and talented group of musicians, actors, models and sportspeople" has enabled the brand to showcase the "fresh new attitude of the Burberry family".

Fellow models Lily Donaldson, Edie Campbell, Alice Gibb and Laura Fraser appear in the campaign with musicians Coco Sumner - daughter of Sting - and Liam Wade who plays guitar for Courtney Love.

Clothes showcased in the images - shot by Mario Testino - include classic trench coats in red, electric blue and hot pink.

Fashion award presented

Seven fledgling designers have been awarded $25,000 each as part of the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation prize.

Given each year to newcomers taking part in New York Fashion Week, the prize aims to support emerging talent in the US fashion industry.

The wine company has been choosing designers to sponsor at the Manhattan event for the past seven years, previously championing the work of Derek Lam, Zac Posen and Proenza Schouler.

This year's recipients include womenswear designers Wayne D Lee, Alexander Wand and Jose Ramon Reyes, as well as menswear label Loden Dager.

"The Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation has become the benchmark for new and exciting talent discovery as each year the foundation unveils the next group of emerging designers to impact the fashion world," explained Ecco Domani's marketing director Patrick Coyle.

Fashion foundation judge and editor of the International Fashion Syndicate, Marylou Luther, added: "The emerging designers who will receive these awards are our future."

Excitement is already building for February's fashion week event in Bryant Park, with front-row tickets for the larger shows in high demand.

Two passes for Derek Lam's show were sold at a charity auction in the ski resort of Aspen for $31,000 last week.

Cavalli continues the Rock&Roll theme

Parisian indie band Rock&Roll will front the latest Cavalli advertising campaign.

The French group were chosen by designer Roberto Cavalli to act as brand ambassadors for the spring 2008 menswear collection.

Rock&Roll will take over the helm from fellow musician Pete Doherty who fronted the autumn/winter menswear campaign after meeting the designer through one-time girlfriend Kate Moss.

The band met with photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin in Los Angeles last November for the promotional shoot, praising the "incredibly talented" Dutch pair.

Incidentally, the photographers also snapped Kate Moss for the accompanying womenswear campaign for spring 2008.

Rock&Roll are no strangers to the fashion world, previously working with Karl Lagerfeld to design the cover of their debut EP First Class Pane.

The advertising campaign will be officially launched next month and the band are said to be working closely with Cavalli on several special events to mark the occasion.

Hello Kitty are welcoming boys

Japan's Sanrio Co is planning to extend the massively successful Hello Kitty brand from girls and young women to boys and young men as well.

The cute and cuddly white cat has traditionally been a feminine fashion brand but the company is hoping to "ruggedise" the cat for a male audience.

"The cute cuddly white cat from Japan's Sanrio Co, usually seen on toys and jewellery for girls and young women, will soon don T-shirts, bags, watches and other products targeting young men," said company spokesman Kazuo Tohmatsu.

"We think Hello Kitty is accepted by young men as a design statement in fashion."

The male targeted Hello Kitty products will go on sale in Japan next month, and there are plans to extend the range to US and other Asian nations.

Milliner set to launch LFW ready-to-wear collection

Milliner Justin Smith is to launch a range of ready-to-wear hats in time for London Fashion Week (LFW).

The Old Compton Street designer plans to release the collection alongside a more affordable offshoot range of main brand J Smith Esquire in February.

This will come as good news for fans of the hat designer, who previously only offered bespoke pieces based on commissions from private clients.

Smith told Womenswear Daily that the ready-to-wear collection of J Smith Esquire hats will be stocked in high-end department stores across the globe, with prices starting at around £300.

All hats will be made alongside the bespoke items at his London studio, with the smaller range from the upcoming Mister Smith line priced from around £60.

The designer also hinted that he is considering a stand-alone shop to sell products from the off-the-peg collection and the diffusion line.

London College of Fashion and Royal College of Art graduate Smith won both the Maria Luisa Award and the i-D Styling Award as part of last year's International Talent Support (ITS) scheme.

Gisele designing for D&G

Posted by: BAS in ,

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen is to design a range of clothes for fashion house Dolce & Gabbana.

The Brazilian model, currently the face of the label's latest fragrance 'The One', will launch her ready-to-wear collection in spring.

Bundchen by Dolce & Gabbana is expected to appear in selected stores across the globe by March, reports Vogue.

Described as "chic and feminine" the range will be the first design venture for Gisele, who has reportedly considered previous collaborations but waited to work with her two friends.

The model has been a regular fixture at Dolce & Gabbana over recent years, appearing on the catwalk and in print campaigns for the design duo.

Her appearance in the campaign for 'The One' has apparently helped to boost worldwide sales of the fragrance by some £75 million.

Known as the highest-paid model in the world, Gisele revealed recently that she has a strong business acumen, insisting on being paid in euros instead of American dollars due to a recent fall in the US currency's worth.

Gucci is set to beJoining the UN

Posted by: BAS in ,

Fashion house Gucci will stage its fundraising fashion week party at the United Nations' (UN) headquarters in New York.

This will be the first time the grounds of the building on the edge of the East River have played host to a fashion event.

Due to take place on February 6th, the fundraising gala will celebrate the launch of Gucci's new flagship store on Fifth Avenue and, with help from Madonna, will generate support for Malawi.

Already set to be one of the key events of New York Fashion Week, the party will be staged on the North Lawn of the UN building and will include live performances from Alicia Keyes, Timbaland and Rihanna.

Madonna's involvement in the Gucci party was announced last month. The star, who adopted a son from Malawi earlier this year, will host the event alongside Gucci's creative director Frida Giannini and a series of other celebrity UNICEF sponsors.

Giannini recently announced that she has designed a limited edition range of eight exclusive accessories which will be launched on August 8th next year to coincide with the opening of the Beijing Olympics.

Holiday Fashion ideas for Kids

Posted by: BAS in ,

By: Karlene Benjamin

Not sure what your kids should wear to all the holiday get-togethers? Luckily for them, holiday style has come a long way since the reindeer sweater. So whether you dress him in a classic tan suit or her in a bohemian flowered skirt, they'll still look cute and stylish. Here are five party-perfect trends from “Cookie” magazine that will not only dazzle in December, but will wear well year-round:
1.Tartan look
Girls: Pair a plaid skirt with a matching blouse. This preppy pattern is at the height of festive dress, but the skirt can also be school-ready when paired with a light sweater, while the top with white jeans can bring your daughter right into spring style.
Boys: Give your boy a brilliantly bookish look in a tartan blazer, whether it is paired with dress pants at a holiday celebration or with dark jeans in the classroom.

2. Classic lookGirls: A navy or forest-green skirt, in corduroy or velvet, is about as timeless as it gets for the holidays. Give the look some personality by matching with a sweet white blouse and red tights. For weekday wear, pair with a cotton T-shirt, leggings and boots.

Boys: A tan suit serves as the perfect canvas for basic boys' holiday style. Dress it up with a jewel-toned shirt and festive tie. Dress it down with jeans and a T-shirt. Sneakers work with either combination.
3. Vintage look Girls: They'll look relaxed yet family-portrait-ready in a vintage-print skirt and an unexpected metallic top. In warmer weather, the skirt works well with a simple tank or graphic T.

Boys: Perfect their vintage look with argyle sweaters or vests and thin corduroy pants. Plus both pieces are versatile enough your little man can wear them all winter long.
4. Boho Princess
Girls: There is no reason to shelve her funky favorites for dressy events. Flowy skirts and tunics in simple fabrics look plenty fancy when paired with a faux fur vest and sparkly ballet flats. Clogs and a jean jacket keep these pieces looking cool the rest of the year.

Boys: Princes can get that regal look by layering organic tunics with tweedy blazers and slouchy dress pants in an earthy palette. Switch out trousers for jeans to make this look play date friendly.
5.Hollywood glamour
Girls: She will sparkle in a long satin dress, complete with enough bows and ruffles to satisfy any girly girl or aspiring star. But even an ensemble as fancy as this can be worn year-round when paired with a slouchy sweater or a denim jacket and some cowboy boots. Boys: A classic tuxedo can also run the gamut from hyper-formal to playground chic. Pair with the typical accouterment for a formal winter bash, and with a rocker T-shirts and Converse for the rest of the season.

H&M AIDS Fight

Posted by: BAS in

In Paris this week, H&M and Designers Against AIDS are linking up with a gang of creative types, including Rihanna, Timbaland and Jade Jagger, to create a cotton collection for guys and girls.
The collection, designed by designers, musicians and artists, begins retailing in H&M stores globally in February 2008.
Plans are for 25 percent of the proceeds from the collection to go to HIV/AIDS prevention projects around the world. Another key goal in creating the collection to be named Fashion Against AIDS is to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS among young people. Twelve million people in the 15 to 24 age group are now infected with the virus.
"Supporting YouthAIDS through the Fashion Against AIDS campaign was a great way to encourage my fans to join me in the fight against HIV/AIDS. I love that H&M is providing a fashionable and easy way for young people all over the world to get involved in this worthy cause," Rihanna said in a release.
Designers Against AIDS (DAA), a non-profit organization that seeks to mold public opinion through joint ventures between fashion designers, musicians and other artists, initiated the venture.
"Fifty percent of the people newly infected with HIV are between the ages of 15 and 24. There is an urgent need to reach this target group. By combining fashion with music we hope to get these young people to 'Stop and Think,' as stated by designer Katharine Hamnett on one of the garments in the collection," said Ninette Murk, founder of DAA.
"Every fifteen seconds someone in the 15-24 age group contracts HIV/AIDS. Shopping has never been more important. Every garment sold makes a difference", added Kate Roberts, the founder of YouthAIDS.
The collection features T-shirts, tank tops and hooded sweaters. All the garments feature an original print, and the neckline label carries the name of the designer.
Some of the prints are subtle and "whisper" the message such as Good Charlotte's design, which includes a young couple under a red umbrella. Other prints raise their voices, including Katharine Hamnett's "Use a Condom!" and "Stop and Think" messaging in big, black, block lettering.
The message behind the campaign is summed up by Henrik Vibskov's print design, which states, "Be aware it is still happening."
Prices vary from to $12.90 to $34.90. All garments are made from 100 percent certified organic cotton and carry a special hang tag that reads: "This might be the most important piece of clothing you've ever had your hands on."It is a must buy and should be in your closet.
