British shoe designer Jonathan Kelsey has created a footwear range for luxury fashion house Mulberry.

This is the first time the brand has branched out into shoes, with the line set to debut as part of London Fashion Week (LFW) next month.

Kelsey has designed a total of five styles for the capsule collection, including a riding boot, an ankle boot and a shoe-boot.

England's answer to Christian Louboutin will present the shoes at LFW on February 14th and the collection will go on sale at select Mulberry stores in September.

Mulberry's chief operating officer Lisa Montague, told Womenswear Daily: "Footwear has always been in our plan, and now is the right time.

"We love Jonathan's styles and he's a good fit for the brand. All the models are based on his last [collection] - and adapted to Mulberry's style, using the colors of the season."

Kelsey has previously worked with his cousin - and one-time Mulberry creative director -Stuart Vevers on a collection for Luella.

The first ever Mulberry shoe line will be on sale by September 2008, and prices will range from $100 to $500

Bella Freud makes new film for her collection (3-minute long film)

Bella Freud will promote her latest collection entitled Demonstration in a short film written by Hanif Kureishi.

The Buddha of Suburbia author is working with the designer and The Queen director Stephen Fears to produce the three-minute movie.

Freud has embarked on similar projects before, previously working with John Malkovich on films to promote her autumn/winter 1999 collection Strap Hanging and 2000's Lady Behave.

According to Vogue, she told the February edition of Tatler that Kureishi has been keen to offer his opinions on the fashion world.

"Hanif's like, 'Well, Bells, this is a gig for your clothes, but I don't want the clothes to be the stars - it's the person who lights up the clothes'," Freud said.

The film version of Strap Hanging is set on a train and based around the story of a Japanese man with inflatable pants.

Several models took part in the project back in 1999, generating interest in the follow-up which was shown at New York Fashion Week and featured Laura Bailey and Jodie Kidd.

My Overall opinion:
I think if the film is to show that her clothing is not just made for stars, then I dont think she should have stars in the roles like last time.

The designers nominated for this year's Rising Stars Awards have been announced by Fashion Group International (FGI).

Those in line for prizes include women swear designers Jason Wu, Christian Cota and Adept pair Joshua Robert Hupper and Miyako Nakamura.

Hisham Oumlil's collection Oumlil is included in the menswear category alongside Carlos Campos, Brian Wood and Alex and Betty Wilcox's label Lord Willy's.

As well as recognizing new menswear and womenswear designers, the annual event also provides support for newcomers in the retail, jewelery and interior design sectors.

This year there are eight finalists in each category, with the awards designed to honor "individuals who are up-and-coming style-makers".

"These awards are very much in keeping with the FGI mission to promote the advancement of both new and seasoned professionals in the fashion industries," a statement from the organisation explained.

Burberry has broken with tradition and chosen to do away with its black and white advertising campaign.

The fashion house has revealed its latest poster campaign featuring Agyness Deyn and a series of other bright young things.

Creative director Christopher Bailey said now marks the perfect time for the label to break away from the black and white images typical of Burberry.

He explained that "movement, energy and character" sum up "the defining spirit of this spring/summer 2008 ad campaign".

"Working together with an eclectic, British and talented group of musicians, actors, models and sportspeople" has enabled the brand to showcase the "fresh new attitude of the Burberry family".

Seven fledgling designers have been awarded $25,000 each as part of the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation prize.

Given each year to newcomers taking part in New York Fashion Week, the prize aims to support emerging talent in the US fashion industry.

The wine company has been choosing designers to sponsor at the Manhattan event for the past seven years, previously championing the work of Derek Lam, Zac Posen and Proenza Schouler.

This year's recipients include womenswear designers Wayne D Lee, Alexander Wand and Jose Ramon Reyes, as well as menswear label Loden Dager.

Parisian indie band Rock&Roll will front the latest Cavalli advertising campaign.

The French group were chosen by designer Roberto Cavalli to act as brand ambassadors for the spring 2008 menswear collection.

Rock&Roll will take over the helm from fellow musician Pete Doherty who fronted the autumn/winter menswear campaign after meeting the designer through one-time girlfriend Kate Moss.

The band met with photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin in Los Angeles last November for the promotional shoot, praising the "incredibly talented" Dutch pair.

Incidentally, the photographers also snapped Kate Moss for the accompanying womenswear campaign for spring 2008.

Milliner Justin Smith is to launch a range of ready-to-wear hats in time for London Fashion Week (LFW).

The Old Compton Street designer plans to release the collection alongside a more affordable offshoot range of main brand J Smith Esquire in February.

This will come as good news for fans of the hat designer, who previously only offered bespoke pieces based on commissions from private clients.

Smith told Womenswear Daily that the ready-to-wear collection of J Smith Esquire hats will be stocked in high-end department stores across the globe, with prices starting at around £300.

All hats will be made alongside the bespoke items at his London studio, with the smaller range from the upcoming Mister Smith line priced from around £60.

The designer also hinted that he is considering a stand-alone shop to sell products from the off-the-peg collection and the diffusion line.

H&M AIDS Fight

In Paris this week, H&M and Designers Against AIDS are linking up with a gang of creative types, including Rihanna, Timbaland and Jade Jagger, to create a cotton collection for guys and girls.

The collection, designed by designers, musicians and artists, begins retailing in H&M stores globally in February 2008.

Plans are for 25 percent of the proceeds from the collection to go to HIV/AIDS prevention projects around the world. Another key goal in creating the collection to be named Fashion Against AIDS is to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS among young people. Twelve million people in the 15 to 24 age group are now infected with the virus.

"Supporting YouthAIDS through the Fashion Against AIDS campaign was a great way to encourage my fans to join me in the fight against HIV/AIDS. I love that H&M is providing a fashionable and easy way for young people all over the world to get involved in this worthy cause," Rihanna said in a release.

Designers Against AIDS (DAA), a non-profit organization that seeks to mold public opinion through joint ventures between fashion designers, musicians and other artists, initiated the venture.

"Fifty percent of the people newly infected with HIV are between the ages of 15 and 24. There is an urgent need to reach this target group. By combining fashion with music we hope to get these young people to 'Stop and Think,' as stated by designer Katharine Hamnett on one of the garments in the collection," said Ninette Murk, founder of DAA.

"Every fifteen seconds someone in the 15-24 age group contracts HIV/AIDS. Shopping has never been more important. Every garment sold makes a difference", added Kate Roberts, the founder of YouthAIDS.

The collection features T-shirts, tank tops and hooded sweaters. All the garments feature an original print, and the neckline label carries the name of the designer.

Some of the prints are subtle and "whisper" the message such as Good Charlotte's design, which includes a young couple under a red umbrella. Other prints raise their voices, including Katharine Hamnett's "Use a Condom!" and "Stop and Think" messaging in big, black, block lettering.

The message behind the campaign is summed up by Henrik Vibskov's print design, which states, "Be aware it is still happening."

Prices vary from to $12.90 to $34.90. All garments are made from 100 percent certified organic cotton and carry a special hang tag that reads: "This might be the most important piece of clothing you've ever had your hands on."It is a must buy and should be in your closet.

Fashion trends are always changing, slightly elusive, extremely seductive.

It has the power to transform an image and make a social statement.

What is fashion anyway?

Something, such as a garment, that is in the current mode: a swimsuit that is the latest fashion.
The style characteristic of the social elite: a man of fashion.
To some, fashion is an art form. To others, it is almost a religion.

For most people it is a method of utilizing clothing, accessories and hair to show or hide something about yourself. You can use fashion to express yourself, to serve as an extension of your personality: goth, skater, soccer mom, professional, and beyond, or you can use fashion to disguise your true self: a conservative in vamp clothing, a vamp in conservative clothing.
Fashion statements can be made with clothes, accessories, shoes, hair, makeup, even your cellphone.

Who decides what's in?

Designers can greatly influence what direction fashion will go in.

How can I work in fashion?

Depending on what you want to do -- from designing to retailing -- there are many paths you can take to get to your destination.

Education is a vital ingredient: many universities offer excellent fashion merchandising courses.

Work experience is another necessary step to working as a professional in the fashion industry. Experience at the retail level (as a sales person in a store) is a great way to get a feel for how consumers buy, mix or reject clothing.

Many students are initially attracted to fashion because it seems like a glamorous business and to some degree it is, but the majority of clothing and accessories that are designed, manufactured and sold have absolutely nothing to do with the glitzy shows associated with famous designers.

The majority of people working in fashion have behind-the-scenes jobs at less-than-glamorous wages. Regardless, most who work in the industry are charged by its vibrancy and creativity and get rewards other than fame and fortune (a fun job, creative outlet, etc.).

Let's see. This is somewhat of a complicated question because sometimes mixing jean colors can look really tacky. If you're wearing really dark bottoms and have a light jean jacket that is semi-ok. If you have all light on then it's ok..it gives you that vintage look...even if they are dark sometimes they can be compatible. the best thing is to ask a friend for their color theory. Okay so we have all seen the fashion shows on TV, or the pictures from them in the magazines and thought about how unbelievably and unnaturally thin the models are. Personally I find it very depressing. I look at these beautiful clothes on these beautiful girls and know that even if I had the money to buy the clothes, they would never look like that on me. I am not a large girl and actually wear a fairly small size, but I still find the fashion industry massively depressing.

This made me wonder for a while about plus size women and their fashion. I mean they must have the same types of thoughts right? Well now they have their own plus size fashion industry. I have seen some of the shows and the models, and these are beautiful women and beautiful clothes.
