Gisele designing for D&G

Posted by: BAS in ,

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen is to design a range of clothes for fashion house Dolce & Gabbana.

The Brazilian model, currently the face of the label's latest fragrance 'The One', will launch her ready-to-wear collection in spring.

Bundchen by Dolce & Gabbana is expected to appear in selected stores across the globe by March, reports Vogue.

Described as "chic and feminine" the range will be the first design venture for Gisele, who has reportedly considered previous collaborations but waited to work with her two friends.

The model has been a regular fixture at Dolce & Gabbana over recent years, appearing on the catwalk and in print campaigns for the design duo.

Her appearance in the campaign for 'The One' has apparently helped to boost worldwide sales of the fragrance by some £75 million.

Known as the highest-paid model in the world, Gisele revealed recently that she has a strong business acumen, insisting on being paid in euros instead of American dollars due to a recent fall in the US currency's worth.

Gucci is set to beJoining the UN

Fashion house Gucci will stage its fundraising fashion week party at the United Nations' (UN) headquarters in New York.

This will be the first time the grounds of the building on the edge of the East River have played host to a fashion event.

Due to take place on February 6th, the fundraising gala will celebrate the launch of Gucci's new flagship store on Fifth Avenue and, with help from Madonna, will generate support for Malawi.

Already set to be one of the key events of New York Fashion Week, the party will be staged on the North Lawn of the UN building and will include live performances from Alicia Keyes, Timbaland and Rihanna.

Madonna's involvement in the Gucci party was announced last month. The star, who adopted a son from Malawi earlier this year, will host the event alongside Gucci's creative director Frida Giannini and a series of other celebrity UNICEF sponsors.

Giannini recently announced that she has designed a limited edition range of eight exclusive accessories which will be launched on August 8th next year to coincide with the opening of the Beijing Olympics.

Holiday Fashion ideas for Kids

Not sure what your kids should wear to all the holiday get-togethers? Luckily for them, holiday style has come a long way since the reindeer sweater. So whether you dress him in a classic tan suit or her in a bohemian flowered skirt, they'll still look cute and stylish. Here are five party-perfect trends from “Cookie” magazine that will not only dazzle in December, but will wear well year-round:
1.Tartan look
Girls: Pair a plaid skirt with a matching blouse. This preppy pattern is at the height of festive dress, but the skirt can also be school-ready when paired with a light sweater, while the top with white jeans can bring your daughter right into spring style.
Boys: Give your boy a brilliantly bookish look in a tartan blazer, whether it is paired with dress pants at a holiday celebration or with dark jeans in the classroom.

2. Classic lookGirls: A navy or forest-green skirt, in corduroy or velvet, is about as timeless as it gets for the holidays. Give the look some personality by matching with a sweet white blouse and red tights. For weekday wear, pair with a cotton T-shirt, leggings and boots.

Boys: A tan suit serves as the perfect canvas for basic boys' holiday style. Dress it up with a jewel-toned shirt and festive tie. Dress it down with jeans and a T-shirt. Sneakers work with either combination.
3. Vintage look Girls: They'll look relaxed yet family-portrait-ready in a vintage-print skirt and an unexpected metallic top. In warmer weather, the skirt works well with a simple tank or graphic T.

Boys: Perfect their vintage look with argyle sweaters or vests and thin corduroy pants. Plus both pieces are versatile enough your little man can wear them all winter long.
4. Boho Princess
Girls: There is no reason to shelve her funky favorites for dressy events. Flowy skirts and tunics in simple fabrics look plenty fancy when paired with a faux fur vest and sparkly ballet flats. Clogs and a jean jacket keep these pieces looking cool the rest of the year.

Boys: Princes can get that regal look by layering organic tunics with tweedy blazers and slouchy dress pants in an earthy palette. Switch out trousers for jeans to make this look play date friendly.
5.Hollywood glamour
Girls: She will sparkle in a long satin dress, complete with enough bows and ruffles to satisfy any girly girl or aspiring star. But even an ensemble as fancy as this can be worn year-round when paired with a slouchy sweater or a denim jacket and some cowboy boots. Boys: A classic tuxedo can also run the gamut from hyper-formal to playground chic. Pair with the typical accouterment for a formal winter bash, and with a rocker T-shirts and Converse for the rest of the season.

H&M AIDS Fight

Posted by: BAS in

In Paris this week, H&M and Designers Against AIDS are linking up with a gang of creative types, including Rihanna, Timbaland and Jade Jagger, to create a cotton collection for guys and girls.
The collection, designed by designers, musicians and artists, begins retailing in H&M stores globally in February 2008.
Plans are for 25 percent of the proceeds from the collection to go to HIV/AIDS prevention projects around the world. Another key goal in creating the collection to be named Fashion Against AIDS is to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS among young people. Twelve million people in the 15 to 24 age group are now infected with the virus.
"Supporting YouthAIDS through the Fashion Against AIDS campaign was a great way to encourage my fans to join me in the fight against HIV/AIDS. I love that H&M is providing a fashionable and easy way for young people all over the world to get involved in this worthy cause," Rihanna said in a release.
Designers Against AIDS (DAA), a non-profit organization that seeks to mold public opinion through joint ventures between fashion designers, musicians and other artists, initiated the venture.
"Fifty percent of the people newly infected with HIV are between the ages of 15 and 24. There is an urgent need to reach this target group. By combining fashion with music we hope to get these young people to 'Stop and Think,' as stated by designer Katharine Hamnett on one of the garments in the collection," said Ninette Murk, founder of DAA.
"Every fifteen seconds someone in the 15-24 age group contracts HIV/AIDS. Shopping has never been more important. Every garment sold makes a difference", added Kate Roberts, the founder of YouthAIDS.
The collection features T-shirts, tank tops and hooded sweaters. All the garments feature an original print, and the neckline label carries the name of the designer.
Some of the prints are subtle and "whisper" the message such as Good Charlotte's design, which includes a young couple under a red umbrella. Other prints raise their voices, including Katharine Hamnett's "Use a Condom!" and "Stop and Think" messaging in big, black, block lettering.
The message behind the campaign is summed up by Henrik Vibskov's print design, which states, "Be aware it is still happening."
Prices vary from to $12.90 to $34.90. All garments are made from 100 percent certified organic cotton and carry a special hang tag that reads: "This might be the most important piece of clothing you've ever had your hands on."It is a must buy and should be in your closet.

What's "in" inside fashion

Posted by: BAS

What it is, who decides what's 'in'?

Fashion trends are always changing, slightly elusive, extremely seductive.

It has the power to transform an image and make a social statement.

What is fashion anyway?

The prevailing style or custom, as in dress or behavior: out of fashion.
Something, such as a garment, that is in the current mode: a swimsuit that is the latest fashion.
The style characteristic of the social elite: a man of fashion.
To some, fashion is an art form. To others, it is almost a religion.

For most people it is a method of utilizing clothing, accessories and hair to show or hide something about yourself. You can use fashion to express yourself, to serve as an extension of your personality: goth, skater, soccer mom, professional, and beyond, or you can use fashion to disguise your true self: a conservative in vamp clothing, a vamp in conservative clothing.
Fashion statements can be made with clothes, accessories, shoes, hair, makeup, even your cellphone.

Who decides what's in?

Designers can greatly influence what direction fashion will go in.

people such as, Miuccia Prada of Prada and Miu Miu, Marc Jacobs
of Marc and Louis Vuitton are considered directional designers
(Prada for remixing classics, Jacobs for vintage-inspired styles).
Working five or six months ahead of the season, the press attends fashion shows presenting designer collections; the media will then give editorial coverage to trends they think their readership is interested in.

Store buyers work many months in advance of the season to place orders with manufacturers for styles they think their customers will want to buy. Celebrities and other opinion leaders (socialites and other glitterati) are usually the first to sport new looks, spurring the buying public into accepting emerging trends.

So everyone from big-name designers to celebrities may be behind influencing the direction fashion will go in, but even with all these factors, it is ultimately up to you, the consumer, who will decide what is "in" when you choose whether or not to buy into a trend.

Where are the world's fashion centers?

New York, Paris and Milan are considered the major hubs for designers and manufacturers of fashion apparel and accessories. London, Los Angeles, Toronto, Hong Kong, Sydney and Sao Paolo, in addition to hundreds of other smaller market areas are host to excellent designers and manufacturers.

How can I work in fashion?

Depending on what you want to do -- from designing to retailing -- there are many paths you can take to get to your destination.

Education is a vital ingredient: many universities offer excellent fashion merchandising courses.

Work experience is another necessary step to working as a professional in the fashion industry. Experience at the retail level (as a sales person in a store) is a great way to get a feel for how consumers buy, mix or reject clothing.

Many students are initially attracted to fashion because it seems like a glamorous business and to some degree it is, but the majority of clothing and accessories that are designed, manufactured and sold have absolutely nothing to do with the glitzy shows associated with famous designers.

The majority of people working in fashion have behind-the-scenes jobs at less-than-glamorous wages. Regardless, most who work in the industry are charged by its vibrancy and creativity and get rewards other than fame and fortune (a fun job, creative outlet, etc.).

Should Your Jacket and Jeans Match

Posted by: BAS in

Dear Experts, What's the rule for wearing jean jackets and jeans? Do they have to match and do they have to be the same color? I am at a loss about this.
Thanks,Hilary

Expert Advice

Let's see. This is somewhat of a complicated question because sometimes mixing jean colors can look really tacky. If you're wearing really dark bottoms and have a light jean jacket that is semi-ok. If you have all light on then it's ok..it gives you that vintage look...even if they are dark sometimes they can be compatible. the best thing is to ask a friend for their color theory. What's really hip right now is the full matching jean outfit.Hope that helped,Chako s.
